How to Write a Poem

Shut your eyes to shutter day.

Then wait until they open into night.

Then wait until a star

cuts night in two for you.

Then try to catch it if you can:

that clarity, that brevity, that light,

that One Being

that never again will be:

that I.

Let my poems fall,

snowflakes,

on the out-spread branches

of one dark spruce:

caught, held, mirrors

of many-armed, many-rooted,

power.
